What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth Whitening is an extremely popular procedure that uses special whitening agents to lighten discolouration and yellow stains on the teeth. There are loads of products available - ranging from unique kinds of toothpaste to whitening strips.

At JJS Dentistry, we strive to help each person create their best smile. So, for people who would like a whiter smile, Dr Serfontein is happy to offer the Phillips Zoom® Teeth Whitening - the premier teeth whitening procedure.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

The Zoom® Teeth Whitening method is easy and comfortable. First, we check whether you are a candidate for the teeth whitening process. A dental consultation is necessary, and if we detect any severe issues, we will need to attend to them before whitening your teeth.

If you're a candidate for Zoom® Teeth Whitening, we coat the gums and soft tissues with a gel for protection. We then apply a layer of the ZOOM! Whitening agent to the front of the teeth before a specially-designed laser light is positioned to activate the whitening treatment.

The whitening treatment is done in four 15-minute sessions, leaving your teeth looking and feeling great.

Most people see their teeth whiten by at least 6-10 shades during the process! Teeth will continue to lighten for 2-3 days following the procedure.

Is Zoom® Teeth Whitening For Me?

Zoom® Teeth Whitening only takes an hour and can be ideal for any patient who wants a whiter smile in a short period.

There's no need to wear whitening trays or administer messy gels to whiten your smile gradually. The convenience of Zoom® Teeth Whitening makes it a stress-free, simple choice for many of our patients!

FAQs

Does teeth whitening work on dentures or veneers?

Unfortunately, teeth whitening is only an option for natural teeth. This is because the teeth whitening method works on the natural tooth's enamel. Therefore, restorations like dentures, veneers, crowns and bridges will need to be replaced if they become stained or discoloured.

How much can teeth whitening lighten teeth?

The Zoom® Teeth Whitening process can lighten your natural teeth by up to 10 shades. However, this depends on the number of sessions you have and the current state of your natural teeth.

Is whitening bad for teeth?

When done professionally, not at all. Seeking your teeth whitening through a trusted and skilled professional will ensure that no damage occurs to the enamel. Research has also shown that teeth whitening has no impact on the strength and minerality of the teeth.

How long do the results last?

Results will vary depending on the individual but can last between a month and a year. You can prolong your results by avoiding foods and beverages that tend to stain the teeth, such as alcohol, coffee, spices and smoking.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Teeth whitening can cause some sensitivity to the enamel and gums, so it's essential to let Dr JJ Serfontein know if you experience tooth sensitivity in general and during the sessions.

How much does teeth whitening cost?

We price our teeth whitening treatment based on the number of sessions and materials used. In-office teeth whitening tends to be more expensive, but you are guaranteed professional care and proper application with little to no risks.

Can I lighten my teeth at home?

At-home whitening kits are available, but we tend to advise against them. It's always best to see a professional for these procedures to prevent damaging your tooth enamel and causing irreparable harm.
